Mokuhanga
Handmade Japanese woodblock prints.
What is mokuhanga?
Japanese woodblock printing, or mokuhanga, is a traditional relief printmaking method. Designs are carved onto a wood plank, saturated with water-based pigment, and hand-printed using a baren. Each color of the print is carved onto it’s own block and layered with the rest, making use of the transparent pigment. Unlike Western styles, it uses no mechanical press or oil-based ink.
